THE PASCHAL CANDLE is placed near the altar at Easter and is lit for each worship service throughout the season. The fifty-day celebration of Easter is related directly to ancient practices of reckoning time. Since time is measured in units of seven (e.g. days), the number seven represents the perfect measure of time, and seven times seven represents the fullness of time. Therefore, the Easter feast lasts seven times seven days, as we celebrate the victourious Christ, who is the fullness of time. At Pentecost (the fiftieth day), we extinguish the candle.
